DiscoTech

Discovering Technology, Building Community

What is a DiscoTech?
More Than Just Tech.

DiscoTech, short for “Discovering Technology,” is an innovative event format where community celebration and hands-on tech learning come alive together. Originally popularized by the Detroit Community Technology Project (DCTP), we at Black Brilliance Research have adapted this dynamic model to specifically uplift and empower our community.

Imagine a space buzzing with energy: vibrant art, engaging music (maybe even a DJ!), and shared food, all creating a fun, informal, and welcoming atmosphere. Alongside this celebratory vibe, DiscoTechs are serious about demystifying the internet and digital technologies. They are part teach-in, part skillshare, part party – a unique blend designed to make technology accessible, engaging, and relevant for everyone.

How Our DiscoTechs
Spark Brilliance

Our DiscoTechs are thoughtfully designed to be more than just events; they are catalysts for learning, connection, and action. Here’s how they typically function:

Hands-On
Learning Stations

Forget dry lectures! At the heart of our DiscoTechs are interactive learning stations. Community members can explore a variety of booths offering live demos, practical tutorials, and open conversations. Topics are diverse and driven by community interest, ranging from digital privacy and understanding internet infrastructure to cybersecurity essentials, the power of digital storytelling, and even device repair skills. The goal is to learn by doing and exploring together.

Community-Centered
& Co-Designed

These events are grounded in popular education principles. This means they are co-designed with our community members, ensuring the content is relevant, the approach is respectful, and the skills shared are practical and immediately applicable to everyday life. We prioritize creating a space where everyone feels comfortable to ask questions, share their knowledge, and learn at their own pace.

92% of jobs in the U.S. require digital skills.

24% of U.S. families do not have internet access.

43% of adults with lowest literacy live in poverty

DiscoTechs make complex technology less intimidating and more accessible to everyone

These events focus on practical tech skills that attendees can use immediately.

DiscoTechs can effectively support research and recruit community members for further engagement (like Digital Stewards).

Building Bridges,
Planting Seeds

DiscoTechs are powerful tools for bridge-building. They provide a dynamic platform to:

  • Gather authentic feedback and learn directly about community needs, challenges, and aspirations regarding technology.
  • Foster meaningful relationships between community members, educators, technologists, and organizers.
  • Plant the seeds for future digital equity initiatives, sparking ideas and collaborations that can lead to lasting change.

Fueling Community
Action Research

For Black Brilliance Research, DiscoTechs are a vital component of our Community Action Research. In this vibrant setting, we can:

  • Gather crucial data through interactive polls, activities, and conversations to better understand the digital landscape of our community.
  • Recruit and engage new Digital Stewards, identifying passionate individuals ready to champion digital literacy and access in their neighborhoods.
  • Inform our curriculum decisions, ensuring our workshops and training programs are directly responsive to the expressed needs and interests of the community.
  • Foster strong community relationships built on trust, shared learning, and collective empowerment.
  • Identify and understand community technology needs from the ground up.
  • Co-design solutions for digital equity, ensuring that the voices and experiences of our community members are central to creating a more just digital future.

Collaborating organizations that join this initiative can expect a range of supportive benefits designed to enhance their community impact:

  • Expert Guidance: Receive personalized consultation and robust support to assist with the planning and execution of digital literacy workshops.
  • Comprehensive Resources: Gain full access to a suite of workshop materials that can be customized with your organization's branding. • Network Access & Technology Support: Become part of a national network, offering the continuous possibility of acquiring donated technological equipment to support your organization's mission-driven activities within the community.
  • Skilled Instructors: Benefit from the involvement of a dedicated digital literacy instructor to facilitate learning.

Individuals who take part in these learning opportunities will find numerous advantages to help them thrive in an increasingly digital world:

  • Skill Development & Validation: Participants will have the chance to develop essential digital skills and acquire certifications that acknowledge their new knowledge and abilities.
  • Engaging Learning Experience: Access well-structured and captivating courses designed to provide a high-quality educational experience.
